He was born on the 9th of June 1957 in South Charleston in West Virginia, USA to the family of Ernest and Odith Jakes; he grew up in Vandalia and attended local Baptist churches. Jakes grew up in a communal village where people assisted one another in everyday activities including raising children so the entire community contributed to his upbringing. People described young Jakes as Stubborn, opinionated and goal driven.
His parent had an entrepreneur spirit and are hardworking the traits they passed to their son later in life. Jake’s mother Odith was an economics teacher who taught all her three children to sew, cook and clean for themselves. Jake’s father Ernest was a self-made businessman and a versatile entrepreneur this is obvious from the way he developed his janitorial business from one bucket and a mob into a large cleaning business that consisted of 42 employees who cleaned everything in Charleston area. He later passed on this entrepreneur spirit to his young son who as soon as he was old enough to do so started delivering products from his mother’s garden and also newspapers.

He enrolled at West Virginia State University and was also preaching part-time in churches, he later dropped out of the university. Jakes was working at a chemical plant job with Union Carbide and at the same time, he was also a part-time music director at the Baptist church.
When the chemical plant he was working for closed down in 1982 and his father later died of kidney disease, Jakes decided to become a full-time minister, church planter and an evangelist in Charleston.

Though the class, many women were able to forget their pains and build a foundation for new growth in Christ.
Jakes started a male version of “Women Thou Art Loosed” and called it “Manpower”. With the experiences he gained by working with women in his congregation he published his first book titled Woman Thou Art Loosed in 1993, the book became a national bestseller and became his signature work till today.
